Traced origins to 1871 when floated in London to acquire and operate a silver mine at Alta, Utah, USA, which had been discovered in 1868. Performed poorly and reconstructed several times under different (but similar) names, latterly as Emma Co Ltd when chief interests were in Australia. Regarded as having representative features of British owned overseas speculative mining businesses of the late 19th century
