Initially based in Hull but soon relocated to London and opened a New York branch in 1877. Emerged as a leading London art dealer sometimes buying whole collections for resale. Succeeded by his son (Lord) Joseph Duveen, 1869-1939, who built substantially on his father's achievements. In decline after 1939 and business sold to Norton Simon in 1964
