Traced origins to 1826 and merger of Dundee & Perth Union Shipping Co and Dundee & Perth Shipping Co. Provided regular coastal cargo/passenger shipping services from Dundee to London and other services via Forth & Clyde Canal to Glasgow. From 1820s adopting steam powered vessels. Expanded by acquisition to become the major coastal shipping business connecting north east Scotland to London and other English ports. Acquisitions included Dundee & Hull Shipping Co in 1857 and Dundee & Newcastle Steam Shipping Co, Kirkcaldy Steamship Co and Aberdeen, Newcastle & Hull Steam Co, all in 1920s. After 1918 also developed services to Europe. Diversified shipping activities after 1945, especially by entry into deep sea tramping. By 1960s shipping interests in decline when diversified into services for North Sea oil and gas industries, ship chandlery, shipping agency, etc. c1970s acquired by Coalite Group and subsequently acquired by Cortachy Holdings.
