Established 1877 through merger of six Scottish distilling businesses, Macfarlane & Co, John Bald & Co (Carsebridge Distillery, Alloa), John Haig & Co (Cameron Bridge, Distillery, Windygates), MacNab Bros & Co (Glenochil Distillery, Menstrie), Robert Moubray (Cambus Distillery, Clackmannanshire) and Stewart & Co (Kirkliston Distillery, West Lothian). These were already loosely connected through Scotch Distillers' Association formed in 1865. 1884 acquired Menzies & Co operators of Caledonian Distillery, Edinburgh. From late 19th century had important yeast production and marketing interests especially via the United Yeast Co Ltd. By early 20th century dominated whisky distilling industry in UK. 1925 merged with leading whisky blenders, John Walker & Sons Ltd, James Buchanan & Co Ltd and John Dewar & Sons Ltd. From 1940s diversified into other spirits, eg gin through acquisition of Tanquaray Gordon & Co Ltd. Also diversified into other industrial sectors, in particular chemicals, pharmaceuticals, glass container, plastics, etc. Suffered reputational damage through Thalidomide drugs litigation. 1986 acquired by Guinness Plc
