Traced origins to the Frodingham Iron & Steel Co Ltd, established c1864, and Appleby Iron Co Ltd, established c1876, in which the Frodingham company came to have a 50% interest by 1917. Also had coal mining interests. Merged with others including Steel, Peech & Tozer Ltd and Samuel Fox & Co Ltd to form United Steel Companies Ltd in 1918. 1934 Frodingham company reconstructed as Appleby Frodingham Steel Co Ltd. As part of United Steel Companies Ltd nationalised in 1951 and denationalised in 1953. Retained separated identity until subsumed into British Steel Corp
