Established 1902 as Danish Bacon Agency Ltd by a group of Danish bacon factories to sell their output direct to British retailers thereby circumventing a ring and resulting high charges of British agency firms.1906 reorganised as Danish Bacon Co, registered in Denmark, which owned Danish Bacon Co Ltd whose offices, warehousing and smoking plant were based in Clerkenwell. 1914-18 started to handle bacon from North America and diversified into other Danish products, eg eggs, butter, etc. After 1918 expanded rapidly, opening new branches throughout UK. Diversified into products of other nations following UK import restrictions of 1930s. Floated on London Stock Exchange 1952 with Danish bacon factories retaining preferential rights. Post 1945 established plant at Selby, from 1952 known as DBC (Industries) Ltd, which built bodies for commercial vehicles, canned meats, packed bacon, etc. From 1950s grew also by acquisition of UK distribution businesses. By 1990s owned by ESS Food of Copenhagen
