Traced origins to Charles A Vandervell, b1871, who in 1890s established C A Vandervell to make portable batteries. 1902 based at Willesden when making wide range of electrical equipment especially for motor vehicles. 1904 relocated to Acton. Came to specialise in ignition, lighting, magnetos, etc, for cars and commercial vehicles. Incorporated 1916 as C A Vandervell & Co Ltd. 1914-18 established major works at Hove. 1926, when a major business, acquired by Joseph Lucas Ltd. At Hove also made machine tools. In 1934 this latter business broke away from the CVA business and as CAV Jigs Moulds & Tools Ltd, controlled by Eric Aron, subsequently diversified into mould making for plastic components. Later in 1930s started making high precision machine tools and, later, others such as automatic lathes in late 1940s. After 1945 briefly made domestic appliances. From 1947 linked with Kearney & Trecker Corp of USA for whom manufactured under licence. Sometime became Kearney & Trecker CVA and, from 1973, K & T Marwin following acquisition of Marwin Machine Tools Ltd of Leicester. From 1986 owned by Vickers Ltd
