Traced origins to c1815 when established at Warrington by Joseph Crosfield, 1792-1844, as soap and candle makers. 1847 renamed Joseph Crosfield & Sons. Candle making business run down from 1860s. Closely associated with Brunner Mond as suppliers of its principal raw materials. Incorporated 1886 when a leading manufacturer with established brands promoted by intensive advertising. 1911 acquired by Brunner Mond. 1919 acquired by Lever Brothers Ltd but continued to trade separately to 1990s when parts of business acquired by ICI and rest by Ineos Capital
