Traced origins to Francis B Crittall who in 1849 acquired an ironmongery business at Braintree. In mid 1880s business taken over by his son, Francis H, 1860-1935, who developed an architectural metal work business. 1889 established Crittall Manufacturing Co Ltd to make metal windows and doors. Developed rapidly into a major business, winning prestige projects and opening a business in USA in 1907. Public company 1924. Walter F Crittall, 1887-1956, was important in its affairs as a designer of window frames, employee housing, etc, through to late 1930s. He influenced the design and building in the 1920s of the model village at Silver End to accommodate employees. 1950s diversified into aluminium windows and curtain walls. 1965 merged with Henry Hope & Co Ltd to form Crittall Hope Ltd. 1968 acquired by Slater Walker Securities Ltd and sold on to Norcros Ltd in 1974. Subsequently other owners. Continues as Crittall Windows Ltd
