Established 1846 by John Cowans and Edward Sheldon. Initially made locomotive wheels, railway forgings and coal handling equipment. From 1850s made cranes and came to specialise in heavy lifting cranes for marine and railway use for which developed an international reputation. Incorporated 1873. 1961 acquired by Clyde Crane & Booth and in 1968 acquired by Clarke Chapman &Co Ltd. Continues
