Traced origins to Charles Cowan who acquired Valleyfield Paper Mill, Penicuik, in 1779. From the start made fine quality paper. By 1851 known as A Cowan & Sons, the largest papermakers in Scotland. By 1870s making stationery when opened a large envelope making factory at Craigside. Incorporated 1889 and floated 1951 when still family influenced. 1965 acquired by Reed Paper Group which closed the business in 1975
