Opened an engineering division 1880s and started metal casting at Tilbury through acquisition of Olley & Sons. Incorporated 1919. c1920 acquired Mercantile Stores Ltd from Furness Withy & Co Ltd. About this time acquired paint manufacturers and ended up with a substantial interest in British Paints Ltd. Later developed a major business in erecting masts and towers, especially radio masts.
