Traced origins to Richard Cory, 1799-82, who established himself in Cardiff in the 1830s as a ship chandler. By 1840s had started shipbroking and coal agency. From 1856 traded as Richard Cory & Sons after being joined by his sons, John, 1828-1910, and Richard, b1830, and from 1859, when Richard retired, as Cory Brothers & Co. 1860s diversified into shipowning and coal exporting which involved establishment of c100 coal depots around world. 1870s diversified into coal mining. Incorporated 1893 as Cory Brothers & Co Ltd when a leading coal mining and distribution business. 1942 acquired by Powell Duffryn Ltd
