Traced origins to Nathaniel Corah, 1777-1832, who set up in business in c1804 at Barlestone as a framesmith. Business failed 1813-14. Re-established at Leicester in 1815 initially as a factor in hosiery trade. 1830 known as Nathaniel Corah & Sons when a significant hosiery manufacturer. Built major works, known as St Margaret's Works, from 1860s. Made wide range of hosiery/knitwear including underwear, jerseys, fancy hosiery, etc. In 1870s made footwear. From 1880s established a network of regional warehouses. Incorporated 1919. From 1920s became a major supplier to Marks & Spencer. Public company 1946. Post war emerged as a leading British clothing manufacturer making hosiery, underwear, overwear, bathing wear. As Corah Plc, and after a long period of decline, acquired in 1989 by Charterhall Plc and broken up
