Cookson family, originally from Penrith, developed major business interests in North East England, starting with Isaac Cookson, c1679-1743, and continuing with his son, John, c1712-83. Isaac was at Newcastle by 1704 and there, and at South Shields, developed important glass making interests some of which were carried on as Airey, Cookson & Co. John Cookson developed important iron production works at Chester le Street and in 1750s was a partner in the first Newcastle bank. The family's business interests were in decline by early 19th century
