Traces origins to Glasgow where William Cook, 1816-98, established as a saw manufacturing business in c1840s. Early 1880s a factory established at Sheffield to make steel castings (especially for the coal mining industry) and tools. Sheffield and Glasgow businesses legally separated 1902 through incorporation as William Cook & Sons (Sheffield) Ltd and William Cook & Sons (Glasgow) Ltd, although ownership and operating links maintained until 1940s. Cook Sheffield expanded rapidly post 1950, building a major new plant in 1960s/70s. 1956 converted to public company. Revived from early 1980s under (Sir) Andrew Cook. Acquired significant UK competitors. Delisted 1997. 2020 continues as William Cook group, a specialist caster for a wide range of applications including in areas of railways and defence
