Traces origins to the print publishing and selling business of Giovanni Torre established in Paris in 1760. Joined by his son, Anthony, by 1767 with the opening of a print shop in London. Paul Peter Colnaghi joined the Paris business in 1783, moved to London in 1785 and entered partnership with Anthony. He soon controlled the business. Emerged as leading print publishers and dealers. From late 19th century also picture dealers, inter alia acquiring old masters and selling them to leading private and institutional collectors. Led with distinction by James Byam Shaw, 1903-92, who was with firm from 1935 to 1968. 1970-81 owned by Lord Rothschild. 1983 opened in New York. Continues in 2018 as world's oldest commercial art gallery and in private ownership
