Established 1814 by Jeremiah Colman, a grain miller at Norwich through purchase of the grain and mustard milling business of Edward Ames at Stoke Holy Cross. as flour and mustard millers. 1823 known as J & J Colman, mustard millers. Mid century started to make starch and laundry blue detergent as well as flour and mustard, and an emphasis started to be placed on packaging and brand development. From 1850 established major works at Carrow, Norwich. From 1860s Royal Warrant Holders. 1896 incorporated as J & J Colman Ltd. From 1912, especially from 1921, associated with Reckitt & Sons Ltd in marketing products outside UK. 1938 merged with Reckitts to form Reckitt & Colman Ltd, a public company. Thereafter focused on food products and was especially known for mustards. Coleman foods operation sold to Unilever Plc 1995 [2023]
