Piano makers and music publishers. Traced origins to 1768 when James Longman set up in business as J Longman & Co. Very soon after restyled Longman, Lukey & Co. 1773 restyled Longman, Lukey & Broderip and as Longman & Broderip in 1796. Royal warrant holders from 1787. 1787 acquired separate premises for production of musical instruments. 1795 bankrupt and soon after reorganised as two businesses, Broderip & Wilkinson of Haymarket and Longman, Clementi & Co of Cheapside. The former, when known as Wilkinson & Wornum, closed in 1812 when the two partners continued in business separately. The latter, after several partnership changes including Clementi & Co and Clementi, continued as Collard & Collard from 1831, the Collard family having joined the partnership in 1799. Muzio Clementi, 1752-1832, was a composer who wrote especially for the piano, and played a leading role in the development of the business as a piano manufacturer. Collard & Collard's partners were the brothers Frederick W, 1772-1860, and William F, 1776-1866. Under them piano manufacture continued but publishing given up. 1850s relocated works from Tottenham Court Road area to Oval Road, Regent's Park, where new works were built. Subsequently incorporated as Collard & Collard Ltd. Acquired by Chappell Piano Co Ltd, of Chalk Farm, in 1929 when in decline and closed 1971 [2024]
