Established in 1877 to distribute printing inks. 1883 started to manufacture inks at West Ham. 1887 incorporated as Coates Brothers & Co Ltd. 1890 opened first branch office, in Manchester. Made varnishes for aircraft 1914-18. 1926 opened a research laboratory. Developed rapidly in 1920s and 30s and diversified latterly into paints, varnishes, resins and other coatings. 1930s started manufacture at Leeds and Glasgow and in c1936 opened first overseas factories, at Durban and Calcutta. 1948 converted to a public company. Continued expansion with opening of additional factories in UK and overseas. Post 1980s acquired by another business [2023]
