Established by William M Christy, 1778-1858, who worked as a hatter in London before moving to Stockport in early 1820s where the London business had trading connections and where he established its hat making interests. Established in 1824 the Stockport & East Cheshire Bank which was sold in 1829. By early 1830s established a cotton textile manufacturing business at Stockport, later Droylsden. 1840s developed toweling, textile type discovered in Turkey, in which the firm specialised and for which it became famous. Its noted brand was Royal Turkish Towel. 1955 acquired by Fine Spinners & Doublers Ltd
