Established 1891 as Chloride Electrical Storage Syndicate Ltd by Electric Storage Battery Co and United Gas Improvement Co, both of USA, to exploit its patents, etc, outside USA and Canada. Most initial output was storage batteries for generating stations and domestic use. 1902 reorganised as Chloride Electrical Storage Co Ltd. Early on established trading arrangements with competitor UK businesses. 1920s-30s made extensive acquisitions eg National Accumulator Co Ltd, with Chloride acting as a de facto focus for rationalisation of UK industry. Diversified into motor, radio, etc, batteries. 1954 US ESB Co's substantial shareholding sold in a public offering. From c1980 traditional activities in decline. 1970s diversified into power protection systems which became sole focus from 2000. Continues in 2009 as Chloride Group Plc
