Matthew Chubb, d1617, was son of a prosperous Dorchester merchant and property owner who succeeded to his father's business, acquiring additional property and developing a money lending business in which he charged very high rates of interest leading to several formal complaints about his activities. Lent £1,000 for the rebuilding of Dorchester following the fire of 1613. Also a noted benefactor and philanthropist at Dorchester, Shaftesbury and Crewkerne
