'British Restaurants' were established under wartime conditions, 1939-45, to feed displaced people or others in need, through provision of cheap meals often mass produced using industrial methods. At top level administered by Ministry of Food and managed by local authorities. Over 2,000 existed by 1943. Disbanded 1947 after which operated as 'Civic Restaurants' by local authorities such as Birmingham Corporation, for benefit of poorer people. By late 1950s had ceased to exist
