Traced origins to 1869 when John Cheal, 1800-96, a farmer, diversified into horticulture at Lowfield Heath. Initially grew and sold trees and shrubs, especially fruit trees, and later developed into a more general nursery business with particular interests in fruit, dahlias and topiary. Known by 1871 as J Cheal & Sons and incorporated 1912. 1870s established a landscape department and became leaders in designing private gardens and public parks. In decline after 1945 and disposed of by Cheal family in 1960s
