Notes:

The Caldwell family were important nursery keepers at Knutsford, Cheshire, and Radshaw Nook, near Knowsley, Lancashire. Traced origins in this business to William Caldwell, 1766-1844, who operated the Knowsley nursery from 1789 to 1796; it was a small business but with a distinguished customer list including aristocrats. He disposed of it to Thomas Caldwell in 1796 when he became involved in the Knutsford Nursery where he had sometime been apprenticed. This nursery had been established c1761 by John Nickson, d1809, and had regional importance. Nickson retired 1796 when the Knutsford firm became Carr & Caldwell and, in 1812, William Caldwell & Co. By 1852 renamed W G Caldwell & Sons. Closed 1992 when still family owned
