The Scali family of Florence emerged in the early 13th century as powerful financiers eventually establishing representation in cities across Europe including Londpn. Specialised in public finance, lending to kings as well as to private individuals. Became principal bankers to Kings of England, notably Edward III. Collapsed suddenly in 1326 partly as result of over extension in London through loans to the King
