Traced origins to Samuel Chatwood, 1833-1909, who was making safes in late 1850s. Early on known as Chatwood & Dawes and in 1864 traded as Chatwood Patent Safe & Lock Co. Based at Bolton. 1910 reconstructed as Chatwood Safe Co Ltd and in 1926-28 relocated to Shrewsbury. Between wars bank strongrooms and night safes became a speciality. Came to be owned by Hall Engineering Industries which, in c1956, merged it with another of their subsidiaries, Milner Safe Co Ltd, to form Chatwood Milner Ltd. 1959 acquired by Chubb Lock & Safe Co Ltd and eventually subsumed in to its organisation
