Traced origins to 1835 when John Every, 1796-1887, iron and brass founder, established the Phoenix Iron Works. Bankrupt 1848 when business acquired by his son, John jun, 1819-1900, who expanded it; by 1856 it employed 30 men. 1855 opened a branch at Brighton with a Mr Newman. 1900 John H Every, d1941, succeeded to the business which was incorporated in 1943 as John Every (Lewes) Ltd. By 1948 employed 450. 1951 acquired from the Every family and renamed East Sussex Engineering Co Ltd. In early years made and especially repaired agricultural machinery. Latterly made fire grates, footscrapers, railings, manhole covers, cisterns, decorative ironwork notably for Sussex seaside resorts and for local railway stations
