Zephaniah Job, 1749-1822, is best known as the 'smugglers' banker' who financed and organised illicit trade through Polperro at the end of 18th century and the beginning of the 19th. But carried on many other activities that exemplified merchants in small ports throughout the country - merchanting, contracting, farming, estate management, banking, shipping, etc. From 1780s principal activity was distributing local produce to elsewhere in Britain and in Europe. Especially involved in grain trade from 1790s. Also operated lime kilns, supplying lime to local farmers
