From early 18th century Greenwich Hospital [Royal Hospital for Seamen] owned Alston Moor and its mineral rights. Over the years leased these to many operators, most notably the London Lead Co from 1745 to 1882 and previously by George Liddle who developed lead smelting works at Nenthead. Other operators included Nenthead & Tynedale Lead & Zinc Co Ltd, Vieille Montagne Zinc Co [of Belgium] which mined zinc from 1896, Earl of Carlisle & Co, Adam Wilkinson, Thomas and John Errington and others.
