Traced origins to c1840 although co-operation had existed since very early 19th century. Membership formalised 1842. Grew into a powerful trade body especially following the establishment of the Cotton Clearing House in 1873. This resulted in disputes with Liverpool cotton merchants and Lancashire cotton spinners [Cotton Spinners' Association] resulting in them establishing a rival body, Liverpool Cotton Exchange Ltd in 1882. Later in 1882 Liverpool Cotton Association formed to include brokers and merchants but not spinners. Liverpool Cotton Exchange Ltd was then wound up and the Brokers'Association followed in 1886
