Traced origins as colliery proprietors and operators to James Bankes, c1542-1617, a successful London goldsmith, who following his retirement, bought coal bearing land in the Wigan area, notably the Manor of Winstanley, in 1795-96. These estates were subsequently developed by his descendants, notably his grandsons, William, 1631-76, and Thomas,1659-1725. In the 19th century the estates and mines were developed by Meyrick Bankes, d1827, and especially his son, also Meyrick, c1811-c8-. By then at least some collieries were leased to operators. To facilitate production Bankes built a horse tramway to link Winstanley to Leeds & Liverpool Canal. Later operated using locomotives. On his death mining carried on by Winstanley Colliery Co Ltd
