Traced origins to James Couper, Senior, 1797-1884, who from 1826 until 1834 operated a ceramics shop at Glasgow. Other short term ventures followed in ceramics and glass distribution and production. These included the Caledonian Pottery & Townhead Grinding Works between 1840 and 1850. In 1850, with his sons James, Junior, 1821-1921, and Roderick, established a new glassworks as James Couper & Sons. Based at City Flint Glass Works, it emerged as a leading manufacturer of decorative glass products. Associated with manufacture of products designed by Christopher Dresser, 1834-1904, notably in Clutha Glass. Richardson family of Stourbridge became partners and important in its management, notably William H Richardson, 1825-1913. Closed 1922
