Thomas Surge, senior, d1825, was, inter alia, an oil merchant, refining and selling whale oil for use as fuel for lamps. His son, Thomas, 1787-1866, inherited his business and developed it by starting whaling and sealing in order to supply the family business. By 1816-17 he was acquiring ships for use as whalers; at some stage he had 22 of them. He also had other interests, most notably a large scale cement works at Northfleet which he developed in the 1840s through acquisition of technology from William Aspdin for manufacture of Portland cement. By 1851 he was referred to as a 'retired merchant'
