Established by Edward Norman who between 1806-28 built a very large complex of eight maltings. He was also a corn, seed, coal, etc, merchant who operated his own ships. He died around 1860 and in early 1860s the maltings were acquired by William Brooks who was engaged in the same activities but also had been an ale and porter merchant. By 1878 was known as W Brooks & Son. Incorporated mid 1930s. This firm developed its seed processing business in 1940s and 50s. Malting ended 1965. Brooks subsequently acquired by Ranks
