Founded by John Holroyd-Reece, an English educated German Jew, with financial backing from Sir Edmund Davis, the mining entrepreneur. Fronted as a British enterprise and published fiction by popular established British authors using the pioneering paperback format later adopted by Penguin Books. Operated in the environment of Nazism. Post war passed to William Collins, Sons & Co Ltd who failed to sell it on and closed it in 1955. At least one of its senior staff later joined Penguin
