(Sir) Samuel Brown, 1776-1852, was a naval officer and later civil engineer who specialised in design of suspension bridges. By 1810s undertaking experiments in manufacture of iron chains and cables initially for naval use and took out patents in 1817 and 1818. Sometime developed chain and cable making facility at Pontypridd, sometime known as Samuel Brown & Co and later as Brown, Lenox & Co. By 1817 designing and building small scale pioneering suspension bridges in Scottish Lowlands. In all designed c18 suspension bridges and c2 piers [including Brighton Chain Pier] and for many, if not all, contracted for their erection and supplied chains. For some he contributed to finance
