James Simmons, 1741- 1807, was in business at Canterbury from 1767 as a stationer, printer and publisher and emerged as a leading citizen, not only powerful in business but holding numerous local public offices, eg as Mayor. 1768 set up the 'Kentish Gazette' which very soon after merged with the established the 'Kentish Post'. Diversified his interests in 1788 into banking in partnership with Henry Gipps; their bank much later merged with Lloyds Bank. 1791 also diversified into grain milling through lease from Canterbury Corporation of King's Mill and Brown's Mill [later Abbot's Mill) which he rebuilt on a huge scale employing John Smeaton. Also retailer of patent medicines
