Gwernor Slate Quarry

Probably first worked early 1860s by John Brewer. Acquired 1866 by Gwernor Slate Quarry Co Ltd, newly formed by North West businessmen. Subsequently owned by a series of mining companies reflecting its marginal profitability including: Gwernor Slate Quarries Ltd (1875), Gwernor Slate Quarry Ltd (1883) and Gwernor Slate Co Ltd (1905). Leases granted by landowners, Hugh Thomas and later his nephew, Rev Hugh Thomas, 1780s to 1894. 1894 acquired by J W G Hughes, owner of other quarries. 1914-26 closed. 1926 reopened by J D Roberts and W J Evans. Closed 1931. 1932 acquired by Dorothea Slate Quarry Co Ltd but not worked again
