Dated to 1818 when Samuel Holland, a Liverpool merchant, leased the site from the Oakeley family. 1825 acquired by Welsh Slate Co when Holland opened a second quarry. A third opened 1840s by Rhiwbryfdir Slate Co. Initially quarried, later mined. Served by Ffestiniog Railway. The three consolidated into one operation from 1878 to 1880s. Subsequently operated by Oakeley Slate Quarries Ltd until closed in 1969. Subsequently resumed by Ffestiniog Slate Co Ltd which was acquired 1998 by Alfred McAlpnie Plc and later part of Welsh Slate Ltd until closed 2010. Sometime largest slate mine in world
