Sir Ernest Cassel, 1852-1921, was a leading financier of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. As a young man he was employed and later associated with the London merchant bankers, Bischoffsheim & Goldschmidt. From 1884 worked entirely on his own account and individually. Designed and funded international investment transactions making a huge fortune. Transactions covered Swedish iron ore, USA railroads, South American governments, National Bank of Turkey, South African gold and diamond mining, etc. Worked closely with established merchant banks such as Baring Brothers. From 1910 a partner of S Japhet & Co
