Established 1956 by (Sir) Charles Clore to hold the footwear retailing and manufacturing interests he had acquired in 1953 through acquisition of J Sears & Co Ltd. He subsequently developed Sears as a holding company for a wide range of businesses. British Shoe grew by acquisition of other footwear retailing businesses to become the dominant force in that sector. Acquisitions included well known retail chains such as Dolcis Ltd, Manfield & Son Ltd, Lilley & Skinner Ltd, etc. In difficulties by 1980s and broken up in 1990s
