Richard 'Dick' Whittington, c1350-1423, is well known for his civic career, latterly as Lord Mayor of London. He derived his great wealth and influence from his business as a mercer and moneylender. By 1379 he was a noted trader in fabrics and associated made up luxury goods, probably participating in exports of wool, woollen cloth and also silks, linens, etc. Supplier to the Court and Royal Wardrobe. By 1388 also an important money lender to the King and aristocracy
