Traced origins to c1824 when Thomas Holmes, d1862, established a draper's shop in Bradford. He also offered financial services and in 1830 was described as a 'canal and other share broker'; also he sold insurance. Succeeded in business by his son John when the business began to develop into a department store. Around 1900 incorporated as John Holmes & Co Ltd. Acquired from Holmes family in 1901 by W E Kirby. About 1930 known as Busbys and in late 1970s acquired by Debenhams who sold the site in late 1970s
