Notes:

Established at Ventnor, Isle of Wight, in 1847 by John Redfern, c1819-95, as Redfern & Tebbit, drapers. Relocated to Cowes in late 1840s from where supplied the royal household at Osborne and came to specialise in women's clothing for walking, yachting, etc. John's sons, John, Stanley and Ernest joined business which became known as John Redfern & Sons by 1873. Opened in London in 1878 and Paris in 1881. By 1892 had branches at Cowes, London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Paris, Nice, Aix les Bains, Cannes, New York, Chicago and Newport, Rhode Island. Business focused on design, production and retail of fashionable women's clothing to wealthy customers and emerged as an internationally renowned couture house. Made aggressive use of advertising, notably in 'the Queen', and enjoyed royal patronage. Incorporated 1892 as Redfern Ltd. In 20th century in decline and in 1924 filed for voluntary liquidation when continued as two businesses, Redfern Paris and Ernest & Redfern, London. Paris closed 1933 and London c1940
