Richard Cooper, 1701-64, was from the mid 1720s a leading engraver at Edinburgh, especially of music, and in due course he invested in property accumulating a substantial portfolio of residences in central Edinburgh. From 1720s to 1750s engraved most of the music published in Scotland but also dominated much of Edinburgh general engraving industry including book illustrations, general prints and maps. Also a print seller, wallpaper seller and interior decorator. Built and leased the Cannongate Concert Hall and was at the centre of Edinburgh's cultural life.
