Notes:

Established in 1859 by Eugene Carless as a refiner and distiller of mineral oils notably for illumination purposes, initially using shale oil from Scotland and coal tar produced in local gas works. Known shortly afterwards as Carless, Blagden & Co and from 1872 as Carless, Capel & Leonard. For long based at Hope Chemical Works, Hackney Wick. 1870s started to refine American oil imports and coined the term 'petrol' to describe its motor spirits. For a while was largest UK refinery. 1920s supplied fuel oil for aircraft. By 1945 focused on fuel oil distribution, coal tar byproducts and production of special spirits such as benzene. Incorporated 1949. Built new refinery at Harwich in early 1960s and started to handle condensate from North Sea gas. Closed Hackney plant in early 1970s. Developed as a major supplier of solvents. Converted to public company 1971 and became involved in UK oil exploration both on shore (Wytch Farm and Humbly Grove) and off shore (North Sea). Taken over in 1989
