Traced origins to David Carlaw, 1832-1907, who in 1860 set up as a model and scientific instrument maker at Glasgow. By 1900 had diversified in manufacture of printing and envelope making machinery and model making, especially steam engines for display purposes, and numerical printing of tickets, etc [via Glasgow Numerical Ticket & Check Book Printing Co]. 1900 opened a car repair business and briefly made motor cars. Soon after established motor car dealership, holding Austin agency for Scotland. 1917 incorporated as David Carlaw & Sons Ltd. 1947 established a holding company structure for the firm's three activities - motor vehicle retailing and repair, envelop machine manufacture, and security printing. Closed c1980s [2023]
