Notes:

Stephen Goldner was a pioneer in production of canned meat. In 1844 he established a meat canning works at Galatz, Moldavia, Romania, winning an agreement to do so from the local government and attracted to the location by very low meat prices. Also developed a canning factory at Houndsditch, City of London. Won contract to supply Royal Navy. However the very poor quality of his products led to the cancellation of his government contracts, especially following the connected death of sailors forming the abortive Franklin Expedition to the Arctic. The Galatz factory closed in 1852 but was later taken over by other British entrepreneurs
